Seems like every time you turn around, there’s another story about Vista, the new OS from Microsoft. Will it be out on time? Will it run on older machines?
One kind of machine we do know Vista will run on is the UMPC, which seems to have been specially designed for the new operating system. The latest kid on the block in that regard is the US700 series, which come with Vista Business or Ultimate pre-installed.
That’s a good start for looking forward, but you also get some impressive hardware features on each model. The most basic model is the US700W, which has a 7-inch 800×470 screen and 1.3 megapixel webcam. The US701 boosts the camera to 2mp and the resolution to 1024×600, adding SiRF Star III GPS. The top-of-the-line model, the US702, tops it all off with a convertible keyboard to keep you happy and pecking away on that weekend away from home.
The processor is a Celeron M 1.06GHz, and the hard drive can pack up to 60GB. All of that is packed into a super-lightweight UMPC that doesn’t top 20 ounces, making it eminently portable.
You’ll enjoy the Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth sync capabilities and the expandable SD card slot as well.
We wish we could tell you how much and where to get one, but we just don’t know.
