There’s no such thing as too much information, especially when you’re up against car repair and you haven’t a clue whether that mechanic is gouging you.

Enter CarMD, a handheld device that can potentially save you hundreds of dollars by doing a quick and dirty diagnosis on your sick vehicle and suggest not only a cure but also how much that cure should set you back.

So you use CarMD to scan your vehicle and then plug the handheld into your PC’s USB port, for Web scanning. You’re connected to the CarMD online database, which can give you pricing for parts and, more importantly, labor.

The little thing costs just $90, and you can register up to three vehicles on it. One little note: It works only with Windows computers.
