Firmware upgrades can go a long way in adding extra functionality and features. Just take a look at the Sony PSP. Microsoft isn’t immune to the firmware bug either, and it seems that the Zune is capable of much more than what’s currently rocking. One of those techie types went in with a resource hacker and discovered the Zune software files on the PC make mention of some rather tasty tidbits.

These aren’t active right now, of course, but they do point toward what the Zune could do some day in the future. Podcast subscription is pretty interesting, as is aspect ratio and additional plug-ins, but with American Idol just around the corner, you may be particularly drawn to the prospect of adding synchronized lyrics.

When (and if) these ever getting tacked on, well, we’ll have to wait for Microsoft to tell us that.
