Volkswagen steps it up with performance-oriented Passat R36

Word is that Volkswagen will officially debut the classy yet sporty Passat R36 at the Essen Motor Show next month, but several pictures have already popped up on the internet of the production model. Combining plenty of performance (3.6L FSI V6, good for 296hp) with a bevy of luxury (faux stamped aluminum trim, aluminum pedals, deeply bostered bucket seats, etc.), the R36 is quite the sight to behold.

They’ve dressed up the outside as well as the inside, with new side sills, a new rear skirt, and a pair of “large diameter tail pipes.” Mating that powerful engine with VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive, the R36 can do the zero to 60 in 5.6 seconds before topping out at 155mph.

Pricing, for both the sedan and wagon variants, is expected to be north of $40k, though there hasn’t been any kind of confirmation one way or the other.
