Now, we knew that the Treo 680 was designed to be an entry-level PDA phone on the cheap, but I never thought they would literally be giving the thing away. The latest rumor has Cingular “selling” the smartphone free of charge. There is a catch, of course: you need to sign up for a $30/month internet plan, and you have to stick with it for the full length of your two-year contract. In effect, you are paying an extra $720 (plus taxes), but you do get to have some nifty ‘net access along the way. (And, naturally, your regular voice plan is on top.) T-Mobile may be considering the Treo 680 as well, but they’d like to see a WiFi version so that it can make use of their hotspots for VoIP and such.
