Microsoft is jumping all over the social networking market with Slam, an application designed for Windows Mobile-powered smartphones. They say that you can “slam” a group of people with messages and photos, and they’ll get instant notification. This will provide for some excellent real-time coordination, but really, isn’t it just one massive SMS/MMS?

Well, not exactly. If you’re rocking MSN Virtual Earth, you get the added functionality of knowing exactly where all your smartphone buddies are.

If you’re interested in Slam, you should be advised to opt for an unlimited data plan, because otherwise you’ll be receiving “bills [of] up to $600/month or more.” Ouch.
