Registration is open for .mobi, addresses of websites designed for mobile viewing.

The announcement comes amid sometimes intense speculation over the efficacy of mobile surfing. Smartphones and other mobile Web-enabled devices present access to WWW sites, but the smallish screens on these devices and the inherently large-screen and large-memory-required nature of many websites have made the mobile surfing experience an unsatisfactory one for many viewers.

Still, nearly 13,000 companies have signed up for .mobi addresses already. The group in charge of overseeing the public domain name registrations, Mobile Top Level Domain, foresees up to 200,000 new owners of mobile sites in the next year.

You can reserve a .mobi address for just US$25, for a two-year ownership. Check it out here.
