LCD displays may be the norm these days, especially when it comes to computer monitors, but if you want to take thinness to a whole new level, you should really check out FOLED, or flexible OLED technology. A FOLED display is literally paper-thin, building on “flexible substrates such as plastic or metallic foil.” I know Samsung’s got to be listening, because if they want to their slim cell phones to the next anorexic frontier, FOLED may be the way to do it.
The video below is pretty darn convincing, but it’s a shame that the short movie displayed is a monochrome green (makes me think of Keanu Reeves and The Matrix for some reason). They’re saying that FOLED has got LCD beat on several fronts, including smoother, more “organic” displays (a la plasma televisions, I suppose). Moreover, LCDs “are typically built on rigid glass substrates and contain a bulky backlight,” whereas FOLED is flexible and thin.
