Sony preloads Memory Sticks with Hollywood movies

Most blank media cards you buy at your local electronics shop are exactly that: blank. We couldn’t possibly expect any different, right, considering that our primary motivation is to use them to store our own multimedia content? Sony has opted to take a decidedly different route with their new Memory Stick Entertainment Packs, which come preloaded with your choice of Hollywood blockbuster.

Available in 1GB and 2GB flavours, these special Memory Stick Duo packages come with an installer DVD. You choose which movie you want using the supplied unlock code, and automatically transfer Hitch, S.W.A.T., The Grudge, or XXX: State of the Union.

The videos have been optimized for viewing on the Sony PlayStation Portable , possibly marking the death of the UMD movie as we know it, but they also work fine on other Memory Stick Duo-compatible devices like Sony’s Cyber shot cameras, Handycam camcorders, or Sony Ericsson mobile phones.

Look for the Memory Stick Entertainment Packs to start shipping next month with the 1GB (MSX-M1GSTEP) and 2GB (MEX-M2GSEP) versions retailing for $60 and $100, respectively.
