The American federal alert system is entering the 21st Century.
The U.S. Government is updating the warning system so that it can include SMS. Currently, only audio and video alerts are available. Satellite broadcasts, including radio, could be on the horizon as well.
It’s all part of a plan to disseminate warnings as widely as possible. AMBER alerts, which notify people of missing children, are already available by SMS.
Since SMS is limited to text, the subsequent warnings will be brief; still, it’s one more way that you can be warned if something is terribly wrong. Since more and more people are on the go these days and the mobile phone is a constant companion moreso than radio and TV, this seems a logical step.
