Maybe I’m just a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to these kinds of things, because I’m still rocking a measly 2-megapixel camera for my vacation pics and that kind of thing. Heck, countless cameraphones have me beat in that department. Everyone else is about to feel the same level of inadequacy, including those of you rocking high powered Hasselblads and drool-worthy Mamiyas. Dalsa Semiconductor successfully manufactured an imaging sensor capable of recording, get this, 111 megapixels of high-resolution goodness.

It’s not the only cam with triple-digit megapixels, however it is the largest single sensor solution. A 500 megapixel behemoth found in Femilab’s Dark Energy Camera combines 60 8megapixel chips.

You won’t be seeing Dalsa’s CCD integrated into any compact picturetakers, because this is a whooping 4-inch square. But hey, that’s the price you pay to be able to snap a shot that measures 10,560 x 10,560 pixels.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, pictures taken with this CCD will likely be in the neighbourhood of 425MB a piece, assuming no compression.
