There seems to be two major camps when it comes to laptop designs: some prefer the smaller, lighter, ultraportable versions with 12-inch screens and feather-light design; others want something as powerful as a top end desktop with a 17-inch or bigger display to boot. Fitting somewhere in between these two extremes is the Satellite J60 from Toshiba.
The 8.3-pound notebook isn’t the lightest unit on the market, but they’ve tried to go a little beefy with the specs to justify the extra weight. The bright 15-inch SXGA+ display is perfect for watching your hi-res movies and rock your feast for the eyes video games, thanks to the include ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics. Powered by an Intel Core Duo T2500 processor, the Toshiba J60 also features a 40 gig hard drive, 512 megabytes of RAM, and an included CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive (no DVD burning, sorry).
Other key features include a quad of USB 2.0 ports, all three flavours of WLAN goodness, and GigaBit Ethernet. Look for Toshiba to start shipping the J60 next week (the 22nd to be exact), with a basic unit going for just over $1500.
