The Ansari X Prize spurred the creation of reusable commercial space vehicles, so U.S. lawmakers are looking to a similar prize to move hydrogen vehicle production forward. By a remarkable 416 to 6 vote, the U.S. House of Representatives have passed the H-Prize Act of 2006. The H-Prize will include three different categories. There will be prizes of $1 million for technological advancements in four areas – hydrogen production, storage, distribution and utilization. The prize will be awarded, if applicable, every other year between 2007 and 2016. There will also be a $4 million prize offered every other year over the same period for prototypes which meet ambitious performance goals. Finally, a $10 million grand prize will be awarded for a transformational technology.
The government will contract with a private foundation to establish criteria and administer the prize. The act also includes $2 million per year for administration and advertising.
