Low-light photos just got easier to take, thanks to a Korean expert in image sensor solutions.

MagnaChip Semiconductor has released the MC511DA, a CMOS image sensor SOC that allows 1.3 megapixel performance even in low light, in a 1/4″ optical format. The powerful system hums along at 15 frames per second at full-resolution and a full 30 fps at VGA resolution. Its 8-bit YUV output plugs in to all standard processors and base-band solutions.

The system optimizes color, gamma, and other aspects of the image, to further compensate for poor conditions. The result is the possibility for better-than-ever-before photos, no matter what the lighting.

“The MC511DA offers unique value by enabling small size modules and superb low-light performance in a single solution,” said Jason Hartlove, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the MagnaChip’s Imaging
Solutions Division.

The sensor is available for preview now. Target start for mass production is in the spring.
