So you have yourself the latest in high speed mobile phone technology, but because you’re stuck in the concrete jungle every day from 9 to 5, you suffer from reduced coverage, basically defeating the whole purpose of your UMTS or HSDPA-enabled handset. At the upcoming 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Nortel will be showcasing some new wireless solutions that they claim will improve GSM, UMTS and HSDPA broadband mobile coverage in buildings, towns and remote areas.

The next time you happen to be out in the middle of nowhere, or stuck dead in the middle of a signal-blocking office building, Nortel will make sure you can still have seamless (and fast) access to mobile TV and video telephony. The company’s vice president of GSM & UMTS Products, Jean-Luc Jezouin, commented that they will be “providing new in-building base stations and driving the use of the 900MHz spectrum.”

Expect Nortel to unveil new Pico BTS, Micro BTS, Remote Radio Head with companion digital BTS, and compact Macro BTS for UMTS and HSDPA. For the less acronym-savvy, what this basically means is increased coverage, powerful software upgrades, reduced costs, and speedy network deployment.
