If the disastrous results of Hurricane Katrina and the terrible tsunami that attacked Southeast Asia have taught us anything, it’s that preparation and information are of utmost importance when responding to a natural disaster. It is with that in mind that the Mobile Tsunami Detector 1.0 was developed, relaying real-time information from the United States Geological Surveys (USGS) Earthquake reading. This prediction program analyzes incoming live information and provides probability and estimated impact times for all countries bordering the Indian Ocean.

The program provides users with up-to-the-minute information that could prove invaluable in times when access to other means of communication, like radio and television may already be severely limited. The software does require Internet access, however, to obtain USGS information.

The program was developed using the Python programming language, and thus it is compatible for all Nokias utilizing Series 60. The handsets listed on the source site, where it seems Mobile Tsunami Detector can be downloaded free of charge, are the N-Gage, 3650, 6600, 6620, 6630, 6680, 7610, 7650, N70 and N90.
