Samsung is a major player in the memory-chip business, but it wants to increase its market share in the non-memory chip sector. In this pursuit, they have entered a partnership with Qualcomm where they will provide them with made-to-order non-memory chips. The numbers of chips and other details of the agreement were not released. Qualcomm wants to diversify its supply. The companies will also collaborate on technology development.
“Our foundry agreement with Samsung will provide an additional source of supply and assist us in our strategy aimed to ensure capacity to support existing and anticipated business growth” in markets for CDMA and wide-band CDMA markets, said Sanjay Jha, Qualcomm’s president of CDMA Technologies. CDMA and wide-band CDMA are the cell technologies used in both the U.S and South Korea. They were both developed by Qualcomm.
The agreement will also see Samsung provide Qualcomm technology and manufacturing services in advanced CMOS-based processes.
