The Sony PCM-D1 is for people who are crazy about sounding good. This is one serious portable linear PCM microphone. It has an incredible 4GB of internal flash memory, but you can also add Memory Stick Pro if that isn’t enough for you. It comes with high speed USB 2.0 support and looks really, really cool.

Where this unit really exerts itself is with the internals. There are two condenser microphones in an X-Y configuration. That means low self-noise, high sensitivity and nearly 30 kHz frequency response.

The unit runs off of 4 AA nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries, they offer four hours of use at full charge. It has an LCD screen that displays all the information you could need and two analog level meters. Recording is done in the WAV format. The PCM-D1 isn’t light at 18.5 ounces, but light isn’t why you would buy this.

It sounds like a podcasters dream and probably will stay in your dreams, especially at US $1,549.99.
