Technology Backfires: French youths using cell phones to plan riots

Paris is still burning and you can thank mobile technology in part for fueling the flames.

Taking a note from anti-globalization protesters who apply mobile technology to organize, disgruntled French youths are using their cellphones to coordinate and plan out riots throughout the country.

According to criminologist Alain Bauer: “Text messages and mobile phones …help small groups of rioters. They can connect easily. It’s not only a way to avoid the police it’s a way to organize the fires.”

Bauer adds: “Its old guerilla tactics with modern technology.”

French authorities declared an official state of emergency Wednesday after two weeks of massive nationwide protests and riots over unemployment and racism.
