Having a camera on a cellphone sure is handy, but it would be even handier if most of the pictures didn’t suck. Johnson Electric must have heard my frustrated whining, because they unveiled a potentially great new product today. The NanoLens is a new motion technology for auto-focus in phone cameras. This will give us pictures of better quality.

NanoLens promises to increase speed, accuracy, smoothness and repeatablility of image quality. Sounds good to me. The technology is on display to manufacturers this month in Hong Kong and will be available early next year. Johnson says that it is the highest performance auto-focus module on the market today. If it is as good as they make it sound then we can’t get our hands on it soon enough.
