Mobile phone camera modules keep shrinking

Will the small wonders ever cease? Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEM) has developed a 2.0 megapixel camera module that measures an extremely small 8.8 x 8.5 x 6.9 mm. Furthermore it also has developed a 1.3 megapixel camera module that measures 7.4 x 7.4 x 5.0 mm. By manufacturing and designing them in an innovative manner, the two Samsung creations are 35% smaller than any existing camera modules currently being used.

“The ultra small camera modules are totally different from others.” SEM Vice President S.G. Hong said. “We can made it the smallest in the world whatever the number of pixels may be. It would make cell phones slimmer and increase the number of dual camera phones.” S.G. Hong said.

Samsung Electro-Mecanics ultimately predicts that the market will grow by a whopping 45% annually by 2007 and it will continue to innovate their Gyro, optical zoom, and mechanical shutters to continue dominating the mobile phone camera market.
