Vodafone and BSkyB team to provide mobile TV to UK
Having a phone just became a whole lot more fun in Britain. Starting tomorrow, BSkyB and Vodafone are teaming up to offer the most comprehensive mobile TV service available in the UK. The 19 channel services will feature MTV, news and sports along with entertainment and movies.
Vodafone already offers a live! service with 250,000 subscribers. Those subscribers will receive the new mobile TV service for free until January 31 and then will pay for each of the TV packages which they subscribe to. The service will be expanded to include more channels in April.
The partners have high expectations for growth in their subscriber base through the holiday season. Other companies are competing in the early stages of this segment in the UK, but this partnership gives Vodafone a position of strength in the market.
Vodafone UK chief marketing officer, Tim Yates said, “This is a highly significant day for both the mobile and television industries. Two industry leaders in Sky and Vodafone have come together to provide the country’s first commercially available mobile TV service available on such a wide range of handsets.”
