The Garmin nüvi GPS Personal Travel System is going to be released in the U.S. soon. It has begun to appear on several retailer sites, Amazon is offering it for pre-order at the price of US $899.99.
This slick unit has been available in Europe for a while now, but it is not yet available preloaded with American data. If you buy a European edition you can load American data into it, but that seems like much more work than buying it preloaded.
The nüvi will tell you where to go (in nine languages if you need it), but it can do so much more, too. It supports translation guides and travel guides, so you can know what to do and what to say when you hit your destination. It’s got a photo viewer, 1 GB of storage for more maps, mp3s or whatever else you need to store, and currency and measurement converters perfect for travelling. It comes with everything you need to mount it in your car or carry it with you. The whole unit is only a little larger its 3.5 inch screen, and weighs just 5.1 ounces.
There is no news yet on a delivery date for the U.S. edition, but it is expected soon.
