The retinal implant designed by IIP Technologies is a unique microchip that is implanted in the eye, it gives stimulation to the optic nerve through optical glasses. The glasses take pictures of the environment, the neuro-computer chip converts the images to pulse sequences, which excite the remaining intact ganglion cells and evoke visual perception in the brain.

It all sounds like a very complicated and scientific device from a sci-fi movie, the implant only works on specific hereditary blindness, but even that is still a very terrific development.

The system is comprised of the implantable Retina Stimulator, a visual interface (sunglasses) and a processing unit that is worn around the waist.

More information is available on IIP’s website.
