British company DSP Design has created a laptop capable of receiving power directly over an Ethernet connection. The Poet 6000 was designed with new energy efficient components allowing it to run on around 12 watts of power.

Power over Ethernet isn’t a new concept; it has been used in many different applications from wireless access points to networked cameras. Currently in development is a new specification, Power over Ethernet Plus; this should be able to deliver 30-35 watts of power, enough to power an ordinary laptop.

No specifications, pricing, or details regarding the Poet 6000 have been released. Check out the company’s website for more details regarding power over Ethernet.
