Verizon has flipped the switch on their International Roaming wireless service. You can now make calls with your roaming enabled mobile phone from Bermuda, Canada, Dominican Republic, Israel, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Korea and Venezuela.

The service isn’t cheap; expect to pay $0.69 per minute plus the servicing carrier’s long distance, toll, surcharges and taxes. Think of all the starving people in the world! For a complete list of international rates visit http://www.verizonwireless.com/international.

To check if your phone is compatible with the roaming plan you can call Verizon Wireless or visit one of their stores. To enable the service, you will need to dial *228 to update your Preferred Roaming List wirelessly. When you are back in the US dial *228 again and press option 2.

In addition to roaming voice, Verizon users can also text message from Canada and the Dominican Republic. It will cost you $0.10 to send and $0.02 to receive in Canada, and $0.25 to send and $0.02 to receive in the Dominican Republic.
