Samsung Electronics today has begun producing 256Mb XDR (eXtreme Data Rate) DRAM memory, one of the most advanced memory technologies to date. It will be primarily targeted to multimedia and gaming products, like the Sony PlayStation 3 console that requires the capability to process high-quality video, fast.

The 256Mb XDR can process data at eight bits per clock cycle (Octal Data Rate) thanks to Differential Rambus Signal Level technology (DRSL) , which is around 10 times faster than DDR 400 memory and five times faster than RDRAM (PC800).

512Mb XDR DRAM capable of 12.8 gigabytes per second bandwith should be out by the first half of this year.
