Olympus today announced that the Olympus Evolt E-300 eight-megapixel Digital SLR camera, sporting a 14 – 45mm wide-angle lens will go on sale next year. The Olympus marketing representitive told us that the camera will begin shipping around January 2005, at the announced price of $999.

The Evolt is the first 100% “digital-from-the-ground-up” consumer SLR, traditional SLRs use glass prisms, while the Evolt uses a sideways swinging mirror system, this will reduce dust on the CCD and improve image quality.
