It all started around March of 2004, the FCC allowed (more like forced the carriers) cell phone users to keep their existing number and change to another carrier (Number Portability). Since then, almost 8 million mobile phone users have switched, obviously frustrated with their current cellular provider.

Taking this power away from the carriers is an odd thing to happen, especially from the FCC, but it will force carriers to become first class in their service and support. Next is to do the same to Canadian cellular providers, the monopolies are growing larger, and there really is on Bell Mobility, Telus and Rogers, since they now bought out Microcell (Fido).
