The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) in Ireland today released a decision to allow commercial facilities the use of mobile phone interceptor base stations.

The interceptors will create a “quiet zone” where mobile phones are not permitted, however they will still allow outgoing emergency calls. This differs from current jammers that completely block the mobile phone from accessing the network; jammers are illegal under the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1926 and the European legislation.
