Despite what many mobile users may find intrusive, the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) has been developing a directory containing 75 percent of the 163 million mobile phone numbers in the USA. If released into the hands of telemarketers and e-mail spammers, wireless subscribers may be paying more for unwanted calls and letters.
“The world of telecommunications continues to change, and every day wireless becomes a more significant part of our world,” said Steve Largent, the association’s president. “This system will provide consumers an opportunity to opt in, if they choose.”
However a choice of opting in may not even be a choice to some, the promise of consumer choice is disingenuous because many cell phone service contracts contain clauses that give permission to publish numbers.
