Samsung plans for 5.0 megapixel camera phones

Samsung today revealed plans to release 15 fps capable mobile video phones for instant video messaging this year. They also plan to work LED and flash modules as well as optical focusing mechanisms into their 2.0 megapixel handsets by next year. Their ultimate goal is to push toward the 5.0 megapixel camera phone and eventually target them to professionals.

Next-generation lenses will also incorporate quicker and more accurate auto-focusing, digital zoom and higher-resolution video capabilities. These enhancements have already doubled the materials cost for CMOS sensor modules to $10.10. Samsung hopes to produce a 2.0 megapixel CMOS module with MPEG-4 video for less than $20 by Q4 2004.
