RealNetworks and Sony Ericsson today announced that Sony Ericsson has licensed RealNetworks technology and will incorporate the RealPlayer including RealAudio and RealVideo, in addition to the 3GPP standards in multimedia capable Sony Ericsson phones. The two companies also announced that Sony Ericsson has joined the Helix Community.
Sony Ericsson did not mention which mobile phones will support the RealPlayer technology, most likely the P800 and P900 models which currently use PacketVideo for video playback will be the first to use this software.
“Sony Ericsson has been very successful in the feature-rich mobile phone market in Europe. By adding RealNetworks’ technologies to those devices both companies will further the vision of ensuring consumers have the best multimedia experiences possible,” said Ian Freed, vice president, Mobile Products and Services, RealNetworks, Inc.
Sony Ericsson will leverage the flexibility of RealNetworks’ Helix Community, and the Helix DNA Client to efficiently bring RealPlayer-enabled mobile handsets to market. The Helix Community is a collaborative effort among RealNetworks, independent developers, and leading companies to extend the Helix DNA platform, the first commercial-grade, multi-format platform for digital media creation, delivery and playback.
