Texas Instruments this week plans to unveil a new digital signal processor that will run at 1GHz. This chip will allow cellular base stations to process 55 GSM cellular network channels at once, whereas earlier TI DSPs running at 600MHz could only handle 35 channels, and the 350MHz could only handle 16 channels.
For the television industry, the DSPs will allow broadcasters to decompress more streams simultaneously or produce higher-definition images. Dalsa, which created the image sensors for the Mars rover Spirit, uses TI DSPs in digital movie cameras.
