AMD Alchemy Au1100 Processor Selected by AMX Corporation for Advanced Touch Panel Technology

AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Low-Power, High-Performance, Highly Integrated Processor Drives Control System Technology for Commercial and Residential Markets

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE:AMD) today announced the AMD Alchemy(TM) Au1100(TM) processor has been selected by AMX Corporation (Nasdaq:AMXC) to power its Modero family of innovative Touch Panels. The 7.5″ and 8.4″ Modero ViewPoint Touch Panels and 7″ Modero Widescreen Touch Panel provide one-touch automated control to simplify the automation and integration of audio/video, environmental and communications technology.

AMX Modero ViewPoint and Modero Widescreen touch panels are designed to seamlessly enable centralized control and automation in almost any environment, making the operation of complex equipment straightforward and convenient. Users have the ability to take instant command over many types of integrated equipment — from projectors, audio/video and window treatments to security, lighting and PCs. The AMD Alchemy Au1100 processor offers a number of benefits to AMX, most notably extended system battery life based on the processor’s low-power capabilities, consuming only 250mW of power at 400 MHz. AMX leverages the high-performance, low-power features of the processor to create an intuitive interface that includes G4 graphics, rich color display and pinpoint on-screen clarity.

Selected in part for its on-chip LCD controller, the Au1100 processor enables unique graphical features including a high-resolution panel color. All of the Modero Touch Panel products allow the user to create icons that flip, spin, morph and expand at the touch of a screen, as well as the ability to listen to MP3 and WAV audio files.

“When looking for an embedded processor that would meet all our needs, the AMD Alchemy Au1100 processor was the natural choice, particularly with its extended peripheral set,” said Peter Nohren, AMX vice president, engineering. “It provides the features and functionality that meet the demands of our customers, including ease-of-integration, high-performance and low-power, all delivered on a small form factor.”

The entire Modero line can be customized to meet the needs of the customer, whether it is wireless mobility, wall mount or tabletop installation, or G4 computer control, which extends remote access and control of a networked computer directly to the interface. The independent SDRAM and static RAM busses used in the Au1100 processor allowed AMX to actualize greater functionality. These features enable greater off-chip data movement speeds, which are critically important to the graphical movement features offered by AMX.

“We work with our customers to help foster innovation by delivering complete solutions that are designed to meet their processing needs for high-integration, high-performance and low-power,” said Phil Pompa, AMD’s vice president of marketing for the Personal Connectivity Solutions group. “AMX is leveraging the performance and power benefits provided by the Au1100 processor, creating an innovative product that can extend the benefits of one-point control into the home and business.”

The Au1100 processor will be featured at Embedded Technology 2003, November 12-14, 2003, in Yokohama, Japan. The AMX Modero Touch Panels will be showcased at the Electronic House Expo, November 10-13, 2003, in Long Beach, Calif.
