Size meets substance in the PCS Phone by Samsung SPH-i500, the much anticipated full-color Palm Powered(TM) PCS Phone in a sleek, stylish clamshell form factor. Sprint and Samsung, the world’s third largest manufacturer of wireless handsets, announced that the newest PCS Vision(SM) Phone with PDA Functionality is now available nationwide in Sprint Stores, online at http://www.sprintpcs.com and in Sprint business channels for a suggested retail price of $599.99.
“By combining the power and breadth of the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network with the most advanced smart devices and relevant applications, Sprint is helping businesses and individuals stay connected and productive,” said Phil Bowman, vice president of business marketing for the PCS Division of Sprint. “The i500 is ideal for anyone who wants a lightweight, pocketable wireless phone, yet likes the convenience of being able to access their email, calendar and contacts, browse the Web, and make phone calls in more places than with any other carrier with a PCS Free & Clear America service plan.”
The Samsung SPH-i500 features the fastest processor to date (66MHz) among the smart devices offered as part of the PCS Clear Wireless Workplace, 16MB of memory and a sleek, unprecedented form factor for a converged device. Whether customers use the i500 to access the Internet, send messages, play games or for productivity applications, the color HTML-capable Blazer browser allows users to take advantage of PCS Vision(SM) speeds to stay in touch faster, easier and with more flexibility.
“We are seeing a sharp rise in demand for streamlined mobile devices that combine the ability to make clear calls with the computing power of a PDA,” said Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president of wireless terminals, Samsung. “Combining the i500’s processing power, the speed of PCS Vision and the familiarity and comfort of a clamshell form factor, the i500 not only meets this demand, but helps busy professionals maximize their time.”
The Samsung i500 is less than four inches tall, one inch thick and weighs less than five ounces, so it’s small enough to fit easily in a pocket or purse. Despite the compact design, the i500 has ample room to view applications on the 162 X 176 pixel TFT touch screen display, supporting 65,000 colors. It also maximizes the amount of usable screen space by placing the Graffiti(R) writing area on the lower flip of the clamshell design just above the dial keypad.
The dual-band, tri-mode Samsung i500 is equipped with several time-saving features, including one-handed and voice-controlled dialing, which eliminates the use of a stylus. Additionally, custom button assignments allow four different designated buttons to be used as shortcuts for chosen applications or functions.
The SPH-i500 comes packaged with both a slim and standard lithium ion battery. The slim battery provides up to 2.8 hours of talk time and 9 days of digital standby, and the standard battery provides 4.2 hours of talk time and 15 days of digital standby. It also comes with a desktop holder/sync cradle, travel charger, handstrap, leather case, extra stylus and Graffiti Card. It also includes a CD-ROM with Palm OS 4.1 Desktop Software, PocketMirror(R) Standard from Chapura(R) for synchronizing with Microsoft Outlook, Weblink to PCS Business Connection(SM) for real-time wireless e-mail, trial Palm OS applications provided by Handango(TM), a Palm Game Pack and a user’s guide. Additional applications and software titles for Palm Powered PCS Phones from Sprint are available on the PCS Software Store at http://sprint.handango.com . Other available accessories include an attachable camera, flex attachable keyboard and vehicle power adapter.
Added Bowman: “The size and substance of the Samsung i500 will appeal to existing Palm users that want to balance their personal and professional lives and be more productive, as well as customers who mainly want to use their phones for entertainment, games and information, but never considered a converged wireless PDA before.”
“Combining Samsung’s world leadership in the handset market with the strength and flexibility of Palm OS enables cutting-edge and easy-to-use smartphones, like the Samsung i500,” said David Nagel, president and chief executive officer of PalmSource. “With the thousands of applications available for the Palm OS platform, users can personalize their device to meet their particular needs.”
