Murata Electronics North America, a world-leading innovator in electronics, today introduced the world’s smallest, full Host Controller Interface (HCI) level BluetoothTM module, Blue ModuleTM, with the ground-breaking dimensions of 9.8mm x 9.6mm x 1.8mm. Designed with Murata’s patented Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramics (LTCC) technology, Blue ModuleTM integrates both active devices (ICs) and passive components to create complete circuits in one chip, making it both a carrier of the IC and a functional device.
This innovative module, which has achieved logo certification for BluetoothTM standard Version 1.1, is ideal for wireless applications such as cell phones, laptop and desktop computers, headsets, telematics and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) as well as advanced products including wireless printers, mouses and keyboards. Designed to meet the expected growth in these markets, Murata’s Blue Module’sTM attributes are also a fit for standardized software solutions that are likely to drive market demand in the near future.

To provide wireless manufacturers, especially those testing Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) Bluetooth ICs, with unmatched functionality in an extremely small package, Murata’s Blue ModuleTM integrates the following components:
Flash Memory which is mounted in the bottom cavity of the substrate;
Band Pass filters and other passives are realized within the device; and
An RF and Baseband One-chip IC (CSR’s BlueCore02), crystal oscillator and additional passives that are mounted on the substrate.
The unique combination of integrated products offers customers several key benefits. The Blue ModuleTM all-in-one device enables engineers to bypass the process of designing and laying out additional RF circuits. Further, it is compatible with other BluetoothTM enabled devices – allowing for greater connectivity. This solution also helps distributors and material control specialists reduce the sourcing and inventory charges as well as the line item cost of managing several part numbers of a bill of materials, providing a cost savings over a discrete solution.
In the future, Murata plans to introduce a modified version of the module specifically for automotive telematic applications.
The current target price is approximately $15 to $20 with the intent of cost reduction as production volumes increase. The current lead time is 16 weeks.
