Metricom and Ricoh will announce a new camera designed for high-speed wireless connectivity.
Ricoh’s RDC-i700 can be purchased with the Ricochet modem, allowing it to transmit images at speeds of 128 Kbps.
Unlike other cameras, the RDC-i700 will also be able to send and receive e-mail and surf the Web.
With its wireless connectivity the camera can transmit its images in documents or HTML files, send them to fax machines, upload them to an FTP site, or e-mail them as attachments.
The 3.34-megapixel camera can also capture video.
Jeff Lengyel, Ricoh’s manager of wireless imaging, said the manufacturer’s suggested retail price will be $1,299.
The RDC-i700, configured with the Ricochet modem, is available now for business customers and through value-added resellers. Lengyel expects it to be available to consumers on April 30.
“For the first 30 to 60 days it will be available only through Ricoh,” Lengyel said, “and then, based off what we learn from consumers, we’ll then open up the distribution channels with the experience we have, so our distributors don’t get caught off guard by consumer requests they can’t fulfill.”
