Sony-Made I-Mode Phone with Over 65,000 Color TFT Display Goes on Sale

NTT DoCoMo Inc. unveiled a new i-mode mobile phone “DoCoMo by Sony SO503i,” which is compatible with the company’s program-download service “i-Appli.”

The new handset made by Sony Corp. is the fourth one that supports the i-Appli service — after F503i, P503i and N503i handsets. It will go on sale on March 9.

One of the characteristics of the new SO503i handset is a 65,536-color thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD). Most handsets with color display screens that have been available since 2000 are 250-color STN panels.

To name a model carrying a LCD with more than 256 colors, N503i which DoCoMo launched on March 3 is the one with a 4,096-color thin-film diode (TFD)-LCD.

As for a model with a 65,536-color TFT-LCD, there is “J-SH05″ which J-Phone Group released in December 2000.
