Sharp Electronics Corporation is setting a new standard for the DVD market with the world’s first eight-inch LCD screen portable DVD player. The DV-L80U raises the bar for portable DVD players by delivering home theater quality features housed in a sleek, compact design that boasts a 13 percent larger view than any other portable. Also being launched at CES 2001 is the DV-L78U, a seven-inch screen portable DVD player with outstanding functionality.
The portable DV-L80U measures just 8.2″ (W) X 6.1″ (H) X 1″ (D) (only slightly larger than a paperback book) and weighs less than two pounds without the battery (2 pounds, 13 ounces with battery). This lightweight design, combined with an easy-to-use graphical user interface, enables consumers to experience high quality entertainment virtually everywhere – from home to the office to the car, to the beach or even camping.
The DV-L80U also boasts up to an incredible 3.5 hour battery life*, a built-in Dolby® Digital Audio Decoder (5.1 channels and Dolby Pro Logic), DVD-RW integrated technology, easy-to-use function controls and an ultra-thin, unified remote control.
“Sharp has raised the bar for the entire DVD market with the first eight-inch portable DVD player,” said Robert Pleyer, video marketing manager, Sharp Electronics Corporation. “Larger screen, more home theater-quality features combined with small size, weight and Sharp styling make the DV-L80U this year’s must-have DVD entertainment unit for the discerning consumer who wants to view movies in the air, on a train, in a car, on the beach, in the office or even at home.”
A Dynamic Entertainment Experience
Equipped with a full array of line outputs and a AV input, the DV-L80U acts as a portable home theater. The unit enables system building with other devices that have S-video input, composite video input or six-channel audio output compatibility, supplying top quality DVD images and sound to televisions or monitors. Output from a video camcorder can also be played back through the DV-L80U for crystal clear, convenient viewing on the player’s large LCD screen. In addition, the portable DVD player is able to read DVD-RW formatted titles and compact discs.
Superior Image Quality
The unit’s superior image quality is the result of Sharp’s proprietary Digital Gamma Correction Playback Circuit, which corrects color values in dim sections of the picture according to the brightness of the video image. In addition, the DV-L80U uses Digital Super Picture Logic to provide even greater sharpness by adjusting brightness/contrast and clarifying outlines and picture details, while reducing signal “noise.”
The DV-L80U uses a thin-profile eight-inch, 16:9 wide-format TFT LCD panel that uses a low-reflectivity black matrix and AGLR (Anti-Glare Low-Reflection) polarizer to reduce reflection of ambient light to provide dramatic video images that defy its compact size.
