Watch manufacturer Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII), in collaboration with AU-System, has produced a new type of watch with fully interactive functions. SII Wrist Companion has a Bluetooth(TM) link which, via a mobile telephone, gives the user access to the Internet, the possibility to send and receive SMS messages, store contact details and a new talking style. AU-System has enabled this interactivity by integrating a WAP browser, the AUS WAP Browser, into the watch, and has also been responsible for the integration and supply of Bluetooth software, based on Ericsson’s Bluetooth Host Stack, into the Wrist Companion.
“We wanted to work with a European consultancy that was leading in mobile product technology. The fact that AU-System could provide us with both the WAP-browser and a deep knowledge in Bluetooth was very key to our choice,” says Jun Hirotomi at Seiko Instruments Inc.
“This is yet another example of the way we can collaborate with relevant suppliers and quickly get emerging technologies onto the market,” says Christer Björk, Business Area Manager at AU-System.
Earlier this year the Wrist Companion was awarded TechTV’s “Best of CES” in the telephony category at the Consumer Electronics Show 2001. The watch will be featured in AU-System?s booth (C33/C39) at the annual 3GSM World Congress Exhibition on February 20-23, 2001 in Cannes, France.
