Japan’s largest mobile phone operator, NTT DoCoMo Inc., on Monday ordered a recall of 103,000 mobile phone models in Japan for a variety of software problems.
The recall, which is limited to Japan, covers four models made by Japanese makers Hitachi Kokusai Electric Inc., Japan Radio Co., Sony Corp. and Sweden’s Telefon AB LM Ericsson.
DoCoMo spokeswoman Yuki Isono said the company had informed phone users of the problems by mail and would replace phones free of charge. She said the costs of the recall were small and would not affect the company’s earnings.
Isono said the biggest problem were phones that suddenly lost power when users who were listening to music tried to answer an incoming call. Some phones displayed the wrong date on e-mail messages received by phone, she said.
All four models can access NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode Internet mobile services.
